Why is Position So Important?
Position at the poker table determines one crucial thing: when you make your decision. The later you act, the more information you have.
Position Groups
- Early position (UTG, UTG+1, UTG+2) — you act first. Play very tight because many players still act after you.
- Middle position (LJ, HJ) — more information, you can widen your range with strong suited hands and connectors.
- Late position (CO, BTN) — the best position. The Button is the single best seat in poker — you act last postflop.
- Blinds (SB, BB) — you must put money in before seeing cards. Small Blind is the worst postflop position.
How Does Position Affect Ranges?
From UTG you should open around 13% of hands. From the Button you can play up to 43%. A hand like K♠J♥ is a fold from UTG, but a raise from the Button. Position literally changes the value of your hand.
Practical Tips
Remember one simple rule: the closer to the button, the wider you play. Focus on playing tight from early positions and loosening up from late positions. This is one of the easiest ways to immediately improve your results.
